The insurance regulator of Thailand has ordered insurers to give discounts on motor insurance premiums for vehicles that have dashboard-mounted cameras, popularly known as dash cams.

The order, signed by Suthiphon Thaveechaiyagarn, secretary-general of the Office of Insurance Commission, was published in the Royal Gazette on Friday and is effective immediately.

Customers that provide proof that their vehicle has a dash cam installed will enjoy a 5% to 10% discount in motor insurance premiums, valid for all vehicle classes. The dash cam must also be functional during the entire period of insurance coverage.

According to the regulator, the presence of a dash cam will help reduce disputes from road accidents by providing video evidence of the incident. This makes it easier for both parties of the accident, the police, and the insurance company.
