The government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region has launched a three-year pilot programme last year to inform the general public, students, and insurance professionals about the various diverse career opportunities in the insurance industry.

The Insurance Pilot Programme is run by the Financial Services and the Treasury Bureau (FSTB) in conjunction with members of the insurance industry. It is composed of a public education programme, a financial incentive scheme for professional training, a summer internship programme, and a “Work-and-learn” programme.

As part of the pilot programme, a public seminar, titled “Explore Your Future” will be held on July 08 at Room 701 of the Yeung Kai-yin Memorial Lecture Theatre, at VTC Tower, 27 Wood Road, Wan Chai. The lecture will introduce to young people and their parents the different professional positions, interesting work experiences, and career prospects for the insurance industry. Speakers from middle and back offices of insurance companies will impart valuable insights to learners, while parenting book author Mak Ho Siu Kuen and recruitment specialist Alison Chang will provide parenting tips.

In April, an insurance news reporting video competition was held to educate secondary and tertiary schools students, teachers, and career counsellors about the different opportunities presented by the industry. The videos will be uploaded for public voting in August, and winners will be announced in September.

Meanwhile, the two month summer internship programme, which provides university students exposure to the operation processes of the industry, has received 216 applications for the 106 available slots. The chosen student interns will be paid a monthly honorarium, of which 75% or HKD7,000 (whichever is lower) will be subsidised by the Hong Kong government.

Participants of the 16-month “Work-and-learn” programme will work in middle and back offices of insurers and intermediaries and will receive on-the-job training. In one week, participants will work four days and attend classes for one day to receive a Professional Diploma in Insurance. The enrolment period for the programme’s third cohort will end in July.
