Broker builds morale through charity work

A local insurance broker has formed a team building program that not only works on building morale and staff dynamics but also helps landmine victims worldwide.

The Helping Hands program was used for the first time by Ausure Insurance Brokers at their recent team building this month. 

Rather than traditional team building activities where participants enjoy an activity on the day and then walk away, the Helping Hands project sees broking staff and management work in teams to build artificial hands for landmine victims in developing countries who would not normally be able to afford prosthetic hands. 

With over 100 million active landmines in 60 countries, there are around 2,000 landmine accidents per month (one every 20 minutes). There are currently 300,000 landmine related amputees globally and 20% of these are children, who have lost hands, meaning the need for prosthetics hands is growing. 

“Co-workers are normally amazed that within a short period of focused activity they can, as a team, change the life of someone less fortunate elsewhere in the world,” said organisational psychologist Matt Henricks who facilitated Ausure’s team building session. 

The activity proved to be a great fit for Ausure reports Group Operations Manager Graeme Lilley: “We’re in the process of merging two companies following Ausure’s purchase of AFM Insurance Brokers last year. Helping Hands was a superb way to get the two company head offices–situated in Newcastle and Brisbane–together on the Gold Coast to participate in a meaningful philanthropic task while strengthening their team work and engaging with company goals. 

“Our head office teams are essentially the helping hands for our insurance broking network, providing support for our 150 broking branches across Australia who in turn help to protect the interests of their clients. Lending a hand is core to Ausure’s values, something everyone in the company can identify with,” added Henricks.
