icare has announced that an industry stalwart will step down from the business.

Steve Hunt will retire after 17 years with the New South Wales government, 12 of which he spent leading the self insurance business.

Hunt was responsible for creating both the NSW Self Insurance Corporation, now icare’s self insurance division, and the Home Building Compensation Fund (HBCF) and was instrumental in the development of Tort Law reform in Australia.

Tim Plant, currently group executive innovation and formerly CEO of QBE’s Australia and New Zealand operations, will expand his responsibilities into the newly created role of group executive, self insurance, community and innovation.

As Hunt transitions into retirement, he will lead the transformation of icare’s self insurance business as group executive, icare self insurance transformation.

“Over the next few months Steve and Tim will work together to ensure a smooth transition of leadership as we work with our government agency clients to transform the operating model and deliver even stronger outcomes for NSW,” Vivek Bhatia, icare CEO, said of the move.

In the newly created role, Plant will lead the self insurance business as well as continue to push an innovation agenda across the organisation whilst keeping his role as leader of the icare Foundation and icare’s health and community engagement teams.

Bhatia praised Hunt’s “magnificent career” as he leaves a strong legacy with the business.

“I’d like to thank Steve for his guidance, hard work and dedication. His commitment to driving the best outcomes for government agencies and for NSW residents is an example for all,” Bhatia continued.
