RSA Canada issued a release yesterday urging both drivers and pedestrians to play their part in reducing collisions.

The insurer cited statistics from Toronto Police Service, which showed that both fatal and non-fatal pedestrian car collisions have increased over the three year period between 2014 and 2016.

In 2016, 1,958 pedestrians sustained injuries resulting from vehicular collisions. 2015 saw 1,905 such injuries, and 2014 1,906.

The number of fatal pedestrian collisions also saw a year-over-year increase, the statistics found. A 31% increase over the three year-period was observed; from 31 fatalities in 2014, to 39 in 2015, and 43 in 2016.

“The fact that these figures are increasing year after year is an alarming trend,” commented RSA Canada spokesperson Brodie Bott. “Whether walking or driving to work, it’s important both motorists and pedestrians slow down, exercise extra caution around busy city streets and sidewalks, and prioritize pedestrian safety.”

“If you’re behind the wheel, be extra careful around high pedestrian areas like the downtown core, or other high volume foot traffic areas like shopping centres, restaurants and entertainment districts,” Bott added.

In its latest release, RSA Canada listed a number of measures both pedestrians and drivers can take to avoid getting into collisions. Tips included enforcing the use of marked crosswalks for pedestrians and keeping an eye out for Community Safety Zone signs for drivers.
