Genworth Canada, in cooperation with Habitat for Humanity Canada and affiliates, is kicking off its annual Meaning of Home contest, now in its tenth year.

The contest invites students from grades four-six from all across Canada to submit a written essay, poem or video that depicts what “home” means to them. The winner of the contest gets to direct a $50,000 grant to a Habitat affiliate of his or her choice, as well as receive an iPad tablet, a pizza party for the winner’s class, and a $1,000 donation to their school.

In celebration of the contest’s tenth anniversary, an additional 10 runners-up will each receive a $5,000 grant to direct to a Habitat affiliate of their choice, along with an iPod Touch multimedia player and a pizza party for their class. Genworth Canada also said that it would donate an additional $10 to local Habitat affiliates for each entry submitted.

Genworth hopes that the contest will help young people “learn how to be engaged, compassionate citizens while directly supporting the home-building initiatives of Habitat affiliates,” a release said.

“The Genworth Canada Meaning of Home contest becomes more rewarding each year,” said Genworth Canada director of marketing and community relations Anita Booth. “By encouraging students to become more engaged, we are teaching them to become more compassionate community members, all while educating on the need for more affordable housing in Canada. We are proud to have provided over $900,000 in funding for Habitat for Humanity across Canada since the contest started in 2007.”

“The continuing generosity of Genworth Canada ensures that more families will experience the stability and independence they need through affordable homeownership,” said Habitat for Humanity Canada president and CEO Mark Rodgers. “Communities across the country benefit from the inspiring creativity we see every year in stories written by Canadian students about what home means to them.”

Entries for the contest will be accepted between October 3 and November 30. The contest winner and runners-up will be announced next year, in February.
