The National Hockey League (NHL) has signed Bloomfield-based insurer Cigna as its official health insurance provider, according to an announcement from the firm.
Aside from providing coverage to the pro league, the insurer has also said it will support the NHLs’ “Every Save Counts” campaign. The campaign is part of the player’s broader year-round Hockey Fights Cancer initiative to raise funds for awareness efforts to help local and national organizations involved in cancer research and care.

A report by trade publication
HartfordBusiness.com said that Cigna will donate $1 to the NHL cancer fundraiser for every save made in the pro league’s games this season, including this year’s Stanley Cup Playoffs.

Cigna has also pledged to match every dollar of online donations ranging from $25 to $100,000 made to the Hockey Fights Cancer initiative.
NHL’s cancer advocacy was established in 1998. To date, the league’s US and Canadian charitable foundations have donated more than $16 million to support local and national research institutions, children’s hospitals, and community organizations, the report said.
