One of the nation’s largest property and casualty insurance companies will be breaking ground for a new head office, moving from its Toronto location to Markham, Ont.

Aviva Canada will be relocating its head office, along with its some 1,500 staff, to 162 Enterprise Blvd., between Highways 7 and 407 in Markham’s central business district.

That section of Markham is currently undergoing a major transformation, highlighted by the 800,000 square-foot Remington Centre; that began construction last fall.

According to Aviva Canada, the new headquarters will be a part of one of Ontario’s largest mixed-use projects, blending office space, dining and retail options, along with “dining and retail options, entertainment facilities and world-class art and culture, creating an urban hub in one of Canada’s fastest growing communities.”

The official ground breaking is slated for February 26.

Aviva recently made headlines following the announcement of its 2013 Community Fund grand prize winners, a contest that garnered millions of votes and shared $1 million among projects from Alberta’s flood-ravaged Camp Gardner to a pony sanctuary in Newfoundland. (continued.)

Part of the new look for Aviva Canada included the appointment of Greg Somerville as president and CEO in October of last year, after serving as executive vice president of broker distribution.

As the second-largest property and casualty insurer in Canada, Aviva Canada has more than 3 million customers.

The parent Aviva Group has some 34 million customers worldwide, and is the U.K.’s largest insurer and one of Europe’s leading providers of life and general insurance.
