Insurers operating in Saskatoon should caution their clients of a freezing weather event expected to be the last winter weather episode for the region this season.

Environment Canada recently issued a forecast, warning the city that it could experience freezing rain starting last night and continuing today.

Weather reports have pegged this event as one of the last below-freezing temperature episodes of the season.

The city revealed to CBC that it has crews closely monitoring road conditions, ready to manage priority roads and high-traffic intersections.

Despite the measures it is taking, the city has encouraged drivers to do their part in keeping the roads safe, by driving slowly and cautiously in icy conditions.

Officials have warned that wet and slushy ice patches on the road are very possible, and that drivers should be wary of such things.

Brokers should remind their clients of the following:

  • Be careful of work crews; drivers who encounter equipment on the road should slow down and remain at least 15 meters behind.
  • Pedestrians and cyclists should also be careful while traveling.
  • Motorists who find themselves in a pinch should not hesitate to contact the city’s 24-hour customer service center for snow-related issues.
