Following the lead of Desjardins Group, two more insurers have pledged their support toward helping flood victims through donations.

La Capitale Insurance and Financial Group and Sun Life Financial announced yesterday that they have each donated $25,000 to the Canadian Red Cross to aid Canadian residents affected by the spring flooding.

The announcements followed news earlier this week that Desjardins Group had made a $100,000 donation.

Heavy rainfall over the week led to extensive flooding in a number of regions across Canada. Weather conditions were so severe that provinces such as Quebec, Ontario, New Brunswick and British Columbia were on high alert due to the high risk of flooding.

Red Cross volunteers have since provided those affected with a variety of relief services. The non-profit has collaborated with local authorities to offer information, registration and family reunification, emotional well-being assistance, lodging, food, and first aid. The humanitarian organization also helped distribute cots and blankets to those displaced by floodwater.

“In line with its mutualist values, La Capitale is contributing to the support and solidarity being extended to the victims of these catastrophic events,” La Capitale said in a company statement.

The insurer also said that it is inviting its own employees to make personal donations to the Red Cross.

"We are committed to helping our Clients and communities impacted by the floods and our thoughts are with our neighbours, families and friends who have been affected," said Sun Life Financial Quebec president Robert Dumas. "We are helping support the Red Cross and their network of highly trained disaster response volunteers who are now on-site to ensure people's needs are being met."

Sun Life Financial’s contribution to the relief efforts came from the Sun Life Financial International Response Fund – a longstanding partnership the insurer created with the Canadian Red Cross in 2005 “to help accelerate emergency response to large-scale international crises”.
