Catastrophe & Flood

To help Toronto’s youth realize the important roles they can play following a disaster, RSA Canada recently sponsored a storm simulation event.

The Youth Economic Opportunities in Disaster Risk Reduction and Climate Adaptation event was held on Wednesday, organized by York University’s Disaster & Emergency Management programs and CLARION. RSA Canada served as a major sponsor for the activity. The event coincided with the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction and the Government of Canada’s Fifth Regional Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction in the Americas.

“RSA was proud to sponsor the Youth Economic Opportunities in Disaster Risk Reduction and Climate Adaptation side event of the Fifth Regional Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) in the Americas,” said RSA Canada CEO Martin Thompson. “Climate change is probably one of the biggest risks our industry faces. We are experiencing more frequent and extreme weather events, for example the floods in Atlantic Canada last October.”

The event featured the theoretical town of “Resilientville,” which had suffered a severe flooding following a storm. Interactive flood scenarios at the event were acted out by small groups of people who were instructed to locate the services and supplies necessary to support those who have fled from their flooded-in homes. Individuals roleplaying as the town’s civic leaders (the mayor, town librarian, police captain and chaplain) talked with the event’s participants on how “emergency preparedness, response, and recovery at the community level can create green employment opportunities in disaster risk reduction and the climate adaptation economy,” a release noted.

RSA Canada business continuity manager Helen Williams and RSA Canada national catastrophe manager Anthony Black participated in the event, discussing how disasters affect Canada from an insurance standpoint.

The Hon. John Godfrey, the Government of Ontario’s Special Advisor on Climate Change was also present at the event, where he helped participants create recommendations to send to the Montreal platform.
