One Fredericton man is spreading the word on the importance of renters insurance in the wake of a horrifying house fire that saw his family escaping with their lives but losing almost everything to the flames.
"We didn't have tenants' insurance ... We do now, of course. And I really feel that it is a very important thing, but you don't think something like this is going to happen to you,” said Chris Stackhouse at a press conference called to publicly thank the community for donations and to draw attention to the importance of renters’ insurance.
Stackhouse woke in the wee hours early in April to a loud noise and smoke filling the rented house. Stackhouse and his wife were able to evacuate their children, aged seven, five, and three, along with as Stackhouse’s mother. He was also able to assist the basement tenant in escaping the flames.
Donations have flooded in to the devastated family in the days since the fire, with such sources as the Red Cross, Big Hearts Small City, Fredericton Anti-Poverty Organization, Forest Hill Elementary School, Value Village as well as members of the general public offering their assistance.
