They say the first step to solving a problem is admitting that you have one, so for any GPS-addicts now is the time to come forward.

A new study has found that one in five drivers is more dangerous on the roads thanks to an addiction to their GPS.

An over-reliance on GPS and smartphone map apps has seen 78% of drivers on British roads rely on technology for directions and speed limits with 18% of those surveyed admitting to driving dangerously thanks to out-dated-instructions or general carelessness.

Those that admitted to dangerous driving had offences ranging from speeding and making sharp U-turns after a missed exit to driving the wrong way down a one-way street, according to British aggregator uSwitch.

“While satnavs and smartphones are an incredibly useful tool for motorists, it is important to remember they are never a complete substitute for knowing the rules of the road,” Rod Jones, insurance expert at uSwitch said.

The new survey found that 56% of drivers use their GPS or smartphone to advise on the road legal speed limit, with 55% using the tech to warn of approaching speed cameras.

For drivers with a satnav addiction, many said that an increase in road signs would help alleviate the problem.

“It is important to remember not to handle your mobile phone or satnav while driving, no matter how tempting,” Jones continued.
