Insurance fraud is a serious issue for the industry but with criminal ‘masterminds’ like these on display, the industry should be more than equipped to meet the challenge.

Astonishing footage has emerged of a fake road crash in the UK that could take the title of the world’s worst insurance scam.

In the video, captured by a driver’s dash cam, a man wheels a scooter out in front of the car, in an attempt to cause an accident.

When the car stops in front of the hapless hoaxer, the man reverses his scooter into the car and jumps onto the wind screen in a theatrical performance fooling precisely no-one.

The scooter driver has an accomplice on hand to witness the ‘accident’ but the car driver quickly tells the two scammers that the entire encounter has been captured on film and they make a quick getaway as the car driver calls the police.

“I’ve got a camera. Do you understand you are on video, you complete idiot,” the woman says in the footage, posted by the Daily Mail.

The Association of British Insurers recently revealed figures that show the insurance industry in the country stops around $40 million (£25 million) of fraud each week.

It looks like these fraudsters may need to work on their routine the next time they look to cash in.
