Three people who apparently knew each other and staged a collision for an insurance claim have been sentenced to jail.
Found guilty of conspiracy to commit fraud by false representation were 28-year-old Qasim Nasser, his 29-year-old wife Hanna Sheikh, and 21-year-old Kassam Ishaaq. A report by Watford Observer said Nasser drove his BMW M3 while Ishaaq used a Honda CRV rental.
According to the report, emergency services had to remove the BMW’s roof during the rescue in February 2016. Both Nasser and Sheikh complained of back pain.
It was found during the investigation, however, that the BMW’s tyre had no defects – contrary to the claim, which said the vehicle broke down because of a flat tyre before the Honda crashed into it.
“Nasser, Sheikh, and Ishaaq were willing to risk serious injury to themselves and others as part of their plan to fraudulently claim money from insurance companies,” said PC Pete Hoddy of the Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire, and Hertfordshire Road Policing Unit, as quoted by the report.
He added: “Their selfish actions meant the emergency services who attended the scene could have been attending other incidents and helping others.”
Nasser was sentenced to two years in prison; Sheikh, one year; and Ishaaq, nine months. The staged accident took place on Berrygrove Lane in Watford.
