Multinational insurer Aegon has announced the appointment of Maurice A. Perkins as senior vice president, global head of government and policy affairs starting June 26.

He will oversee the company’s government relations and all its related aspects in Europe, the Americas and Asia.

PRNewswire reports that Perkins will succeed Michael F. Consedine, who will move on to become the chief executive of the National Association of Insurance Commissioners.

“We are pleased to have someone of Maurice’s experience and talent join our team. Maurice will continue our practice of engaging in open and constructive dialogue with those whose decisions impact our ability to help people achieve a lifetime of financial security,” said Alex Wynaendts, Aegon chief executive, in the report.

Perkins has served for more than a decade with the American Council of Life Insurers, most recently as senior vice president for federal relations. His areas of expertise cover insurance regulation, tax reform and international financial services issues, the wire report said.

He is also credited with playing a key role in identifying insurance priorities in the drafting of the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act of 2010.

Perkins was also drafted to serve as a senior staff member of the US Senate Committees on Banking and Foreign Relations. In this capacity, he collaborated with US Treasury and State Department officials where he cut his teeth in international trade and commerce, and gained experience in US-EU financial relations.

Apart from his professional commitments, Perkins is a member of the Board of Trustees of the Freedom House, a US-based non-profit which advocates for democratic change and human rights outside the country.
