Industry heavyweight Aviva has appointed Patrick Tiernan as chief financial officer of its general insurance business in Britain.

Tiernan will join the company in January 2017 to succeed Colm Holmes, who was named CEO of the UK general insurance unit in June.

Holmes, who worked with Tiernan in previous roles earlier in their careers, described the new recruit as an “exceptionally talented insurance executive.”

“The future success of Aviva UK GI will be built upon well managed and profitable growth, whilst maintaining cost discipline and resilience to external events,” Holmes said.

“Patrick will rise to these challenges because he brings outstanding financial acumen and commercial insights developed over many years in the insurance industry,” he added.

Tiernan, who is moving from Starstone Insurance where he served as group COO, said that he is “tremendously excited” to join Aviva.

“Aviva has a fantastic reputation, a strong and well respected brand and great people,” he said. “I look forward to working with Colm and the rest of the executive team to deliver continued success for UK GI.”
