One of the most well-known names in British insurance is to move on to pastures new as Bill Paton, claims director for RSA, is to step down at the end of April 2017.

Paton first joined RSA back in 2015 and, according to a company statement, helped “shape the overall claims strategy for the business”. He was also one of the spearheads behind RSA’s claims transformation programme earlier this year.

However, his tenure in the industry stretches far beyond his run at RSA. He first joined the insurance industry in 1979, holding several senior roles at AXA over a 20-year period culminating in the position of operations director. He then moved on to hold a similar role at Capita Insurance Services before joining Zurich in 2003, where he was both UK and European chief claims officer. Before joining RSA, Bill was CEO of Claims Solutions Group; a subsidiary of DAC Beachcroft.

“The world of claims has been a fascinating part of my life for the past 37 years,” said Paton. “My time at RSA has been a truly enjoyable experience, working with committed and dedicated colleagues within claims and the wider management team. Across the business, there has been a high level of collaboration to ensure our proposition is market-leading and always able to respond to the changing needs of our customers.”

Paton will be succeeded in the role of claims director for the UK, Western Europe and the Middle East by Karl Helgesen who joins from Zurich where he has held leadership roles since 2008 and is currently Zurich’s UK chief claims officer.

“I am excited to be joining RSA at a time of transformative change within the claims function and I look forward to working with the team to chart and deliver on the next stage of the journey,” commented Helgesen.
