Marsh & McLennan has paid tribute to its former vice chairman, Robert J. Newhouse Jr., who has passed away.

Newhouse Jr. spent 36 years working at the firm, and was described as a “transformative leader,” an “iconic executive,” and a “true gentlemen,” in a tribute from the company’s CEO.

The former vice chairman, who retired from Marsh & McLennan in 1990, died on August 26 following a brief illness, it was reported.

Newhouse Jr. served as an officer in the US Navy during the Second World War, going on to begin his career in the insurance industry in 1954, according to his obituary in the New York Times. He was described as “one of the architects of the Bermuda insurance industry,” and was said to be instrumental in creating and managing companies including Ace, Excel, AXIS, and Mid Ocean.

“It was with great sadness that we learned of the recent passing of Robert J. Newhouse, Jr., who retired as Vice Chairman of Marsh & McLennan Companies in 1990,” Dan Glaser, president & CEO, Marsh & McLennan Companies, said in a statement today.

“During his 36-year career at Marsh & McLennan, Bob was a transformative leader in our company’s history, an iconic executive in our industry and a true gentleman. On behalf of all of our colleagues at Marsh & McLennan, I extend our heartfelt condolences to Bob’s family, and celebrate his life and many contributions.”
