Specialist insurance firm Markel has added two new additions to its board of directors and appointed a new vice chairman.

Markel announced that its co-CEOs, Thomas Gayner and Richard Whitt III, were elected to the board on August 30.

Board chairman Alan Kirshner said Gayner and Whitt are great additions to the panel.

“The corporation will benefit greatly from their participation on the board as members bringing with them a wealth of knowledge and experience as well as strategic insight and foresight into opportunities that lie ahead,” Krishner said.

The insurer has also announced that company president Michael Crowley has been appointed as vice chairman of the board.

"This title honours the significant contributions Mike has made to Markel's success and recognizes the key role he will continue to play in managing the organization along with Tom and Richie,” Kirshner said of the latest appointment.

Both Gayner and Whitt have held their current posts for more than 20 years each. Crowley, meanwhile, has been the company president since 2009.
