Specialist insurer Markel International has appointed one of its senior underwriters as new head of professional indemnity.

Bhavik Desai has taken over the role, replacing David Sawyer who is now the managing director of professional and financial risks.

Desai’s unit is now part of the larger and newly created specialty and financial lines division, headed by James Hastings.

“With professional and financial risks now being part of the larger specialty and financial lines division, we will be looking to explore development opportunities across this business group and more widely across Markel,” Sawyer said.

“Bhav takes over a team that is fundamental to the continuing success of professional and financial risks and the larger division. It is great that he now has the opportunity to take on the leadership of the team and help develop the business and products in this class,” he added.

Desai joined Markel in 2013 and previously served as professional indemnity underwriter for over three years and later as senior underwriter for almost a year.

Before moving to Markel, Desai worked at Chartis as UK construction practice manager and assistant vice president and as commercial professional liability senior underwriter.

Desai also used to serve as commercial professional liability underwriter and professional associate at AIG.
