Swinton Insurance is reportedly closing one of its shops in Lincolnshire in what could be the latest part of a rationalisation plan that will cut the firm’s branch network by 40%.

The high street broker is set to close its Gainsborough branch in the next two weeks and has informed customers of the change, the Lincolnshire Echo reported.

“We are investing in our network of high street branches to create a smaller number of more efficient branches and a modern contact centre. These changes reflect how our customers choose to engage with us,” the report quoted a Swinton spokesperson as saying.

“As part of this process the Gainsborough branch will close on Saturday, October 1,” the spokesperson continued, adding that customers “will continue to receive an excellent service from colleagues in our Lincoln branch, our contact centre and online.”

In March, Swinton announced that it will close 130 of 325 high street branches across the UK by the middle of 2017.

According to a report by This is Money, the closures will result in job losses and branch manager roles are most at risk.

The report said Swinton had not revealed the location of the closures and the exact number of job cuts. The broker confirmed though that the majority of the affected staff will be redeployed.

The branches to be closed were selected due to various factors, including declining footfall and “changing requirements of customers,” Swinton told This is Money.

“Swinton will continue to have more branches on the high street than any other insurance broker and we are testing new branch formats to enhance the customer experience within the communities we serve,” the financial news website quoted chief executive Gilles Normand as saying.
