Manchester-based general insurer Uinsure has announced the hiring of Barry Smith as a non-executive director.

Smith led Ageas UK for more than ten years and was also appointed its chief operating officer. He was credited with establishing one of the largest partnerships in the UK market with Tesco Underwriting, as well as forging alliances with John Lewis and Age UK.  Smith also presided over the acquisition of Groupama UK in 2012.

Simon Taylor, CEO of Uinsure, said, "We've made no secret of the fact we have ambitious growth plans for Uinsure and over the last couple of years we have been bolstering our team in order to support these plans.

"Barry's appointment helps us to take the next step in that journey and I am delighted to welcome him to the board."

Smith will remain in his non-executive director role on Ageas’ boards in the UK, Turkey, Italy, and Portugal.
