Following UK General’s acquisition by J. C. Flowers & Co. LLC, the specialist personal lines managing general agent (MGA) has appointed John Spencer as non-executive chairman.

Spencer is an experienced insurance executive who has fulfilled a number of senior roles in the London Market. He is currently non-executive director at Markel International and Newline Group.

Prior to his new role with UK General, Spencer was non-executive chairman at Argo Global between 2008 and 2016. Prior to that, he was CEO of BMS Group.

UK General managing director Karen Beales said she looks forward to drawing on Spencer’s deep knowledge of the industry.

“Now, as we stand on the threshold of the next phase of our journey under the ownership of J. C. Flowers, John will help us continue to push the boundaries of the MGA model and stand out among our peers,” she commented.

Meanwhile, Spencer said he has always been a keen supporter of the MGA model and believes it is more relevant than ever in today’s marketplace. He added, “The key to sustainable success lies in delivering valuable insurance protection for customers while maintaining underwriting discipline on behalf of capacity providers.”

Spencer’s appointment has received regulatory approval.
