Lockton International has appointed Alistair Rivers as global head of marine and transportation.

The new hire will lead what Lockton described as a “newly revitalised” marine and transportation business group, which was developed following a recent drive to build the global practice’s key management, production, and servicing resources. Five team members have been hired from companies with a major marine presence, and Lockton has also acquired PL Ferrari as well as minority stakes in LCH in Singapore and Integra in Turkey.

Rivers will be responsible for overseeing the specialist marine team’s continuing global expansion. In addition, he will be in charge of the other key transportation businesses such as aviation, cargo, and specie.

Prior to Lockton, Rivers held several senior positions at Willis including chief executive of marine, co-head of global specialties London, head of global natural resources, and co-head of global property & casualty.

“We have a window of opportunity to establish a working global model for the marine specialism at Lockton that delivers more for clients and for our people,” commented Rivers.

He added: “Lockton are a relatively new force in this market, and I see us as the step change from a 20th century way of thinking to a modern 21st century outlook, utilising new technologies and driving a modern approach to insurance in the marine and transport industries.”

For Lockton chief executive Neil Nimmo, they are building what he called “a powerful global marine infrastructure” aimed at boosting local capabilities and delivering global market agility for clients.

“To do that, we need a strong leader with great knowledge of the sector – and we have found that in Alistair,” noted Nimmo. “We’re delighted to have him aboard and are excited to see what he and his team will do.”

According to the chief executive, the vision for the new marine and transportation group was to develop global resources and skills to be able to provide solutions supported by a global service offering.

“We think we have achieved this – our marine platform now includes the best experts in the key markets across the world,” said Nimmo.
