Markel International has strengthened its cargo team with the addition of Monica Novella, a former assistant underwriter at XL Catlin.

Novella has been appointed as assistant cargo underwriter in Markel International’s marine, energy and property business. She will report to Ryan Godfrey, who was named senior underwriter and head of the cargo team in January.

“We are delighted with Monica’s appointment which adds further depth and underwriting strength to the existing team,” marine managing director Chris Fenn said of the new hire.

“With Ryan’s appointment at the beginning of the year it reflects Markel’s commitment to becoming a leading cargo team within Lloyd’s,” Fenn also said.

Before joining Markel International, Novella spent 16 years at XL Catlin where she was an assistant underwriter in London and in Genoa, Italy. In her previous role, she helped develop the insurer’s cargo account.

Earlier in her career, Novella also worked as an underwriting assistant at Wellington Syndicate Services Ltd in Italy.
