In a recent series of crash tests conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), Ford’s 2016 F-150 SuperCab was revealed to have significantly improved in terms of safety since its last iteration—moving from “marginal” safety levels to “good”—catapulting the vehicle to the institute’s list of top auto picks for passenger safety.
The IIHS tested the F-150 SuperCab along with two pickup body styles each from General Motors Co., Toyota Motor Corp., and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NA. Testing revealed that only Ford’s truck passed the test with a “good” rating. The crash tests simulated partial head-on collisions at 40 mph.
The F-150 SuperCab’s improved test score earned it IIHS’ Top Safety Pick designation. According to an article on Bloomberg’s website, Ford’s F-150 SuperCrew was also designated a Top Safety Pick in previous testing.
“We commend Ford for taking last year’s test results to heart and upgrading protection for the SuperCab occupants in small overlap crashes,” said IIHS Vehicle Research Center vice president Raul Arbelaez in a statement. “Ford is leading the way among large pickup manufacturers when it comes to protecting people in a range of crashes.”
