For the second consecutive year, the head of National Interstate Insurance has clinched Smart Business Magazine’s Smart 50 Award, which honors the top regional executives for their skills to successfully establish and lead pioneering and “smart” organizations.

Tony Mercurio, president and CEO, has headed the Ohio-based specialty property and casualty insurance holding firm for the past 20 years. “I’m honored to receive Smart Business Magazine’s Smart 50 Award,” he said. “This award is a testament to the innovative approach National Interstate has taken toward commercial transportation insurance and to our committed and talented workforce.”

National Interstate’s subsidiaries include Vanliner Insurance and Triumphe Casualty Company. “Our partnership approach to commercial transportation insurance has created meaningful business relationships with our insureds, paving the way for sustained growth,” Mercurio said.

The company offers more than 30 different insurance products, including traditional insurance, innovative alternative risk transfer (ART) programs for commercial companies, and insurance for specialty vehicle owners. It has more than 600 employees including those in its operations at Vanliner.

In November last year, National Interstate closed a merger with American Financial Group, after the former acquired all shares of the latter not previously owned by AFG’s wholly-owned subsidiary.
