California state senator Ricardo Lara has announced his bid for the insurance commissioner post in 2018.

The Democrat has expressed his opposition to moves by President Donald J. Trump to repeal the Affordable Care Act. Lara recently proposed a single-player healthcare system for his home state.

“I’m running to be California’s next state insurance commissioner because I believe at my core that California needs a strong defender, and a counterpuncher, who will stand up to fight our bullying President, Donald Trump, and his increasingly reckless federal government on issues from healthcare access to economic security and more,” Lara was quoted as saying in a Los Angeles Times report.

Lara has also pushed legislation providing healthcare coverage for children who are in the state without proper documentation. He is also an advocate of providing coverage for immigrants who are willing to pay for their insurance.

The senator is in the commissioner race with Democratic Assembly members Susan Bonilla and Henry Perea, and Santa Monica oncologist Paul Song.
