Begin with the end in mind is an aphorism apropos to project management in construction, says Cheetah Learning founder Michelle LaBrosse.

She explained in a recent report that while it is helpful to establish and achieve small goals in project management, “it’s important to periodically remind yourself of the larger, long-term, audacious, big-picture goals.”

LaBrosse also noted that it is important to discern the difference between habits and goals and to be able to identify long-term and short term goals. She added that too often contractors run on autopilot in their daily operations, which makes it difficult to define the goals that must be achieved.

“Managing time effectively is like adding on more hours to each day,” said LaBrosse.

She explained that the first step towards better time management is prioritizing daily tasks. For project leaders, she suggested that they tackle one “big task” at the start of the work day since more often than not, the more difficult task being put off for later is often the more important and urgent one.
