Commissioner, commerce and insurance
Tennessee Department of Commerce and Insurance
Julie Mix McPeak has led the Tennessee Department of Commerce and Insurance since her appointment by Governor Bill Haslam in 2011, which made her the first woman to serve as chief insurance regulator in two different states.
Before being named to lead the department, McPeak practiced as counsel in the insurance practice group of law firm Burr & Forman LLP. She also served as the attorney and general counsel, and later the executive director, for the Kentucky Office of Insurance.
An active participant in the National Association of Insurance Commissioners [NAIC] for nearly 20 years, McPeak has served on the NAIC’s Executive Committee since 2013 and was named president-elect in December 2016. She also serves as a member of the Federal Advisory Committee on Insurance and served as co-counsel for Kentucky Association of Health Plans v. Miller, a case heard before the Supreme Court regarding ERISA preemption and state ‘Any Willing Provider’ statutes.
