Queensland insurance-banking company Suncorp will welcome its first ex-politician board member with the appointment of former federal labour finance minister Lindsay Tanner as non-executive director.

Tanner will commence his new role in January, filling one of the vacancies left by Bill Bartlett and Ewoud Kulk, who retired after the Suncorp annual general meeting in September.

Tanner, who began his career as a personal injuries lawyer and was minister for finance and deregulation in the Rudd and Gillard governments, brings to the firm a wide range of experience, having built a portfolio of business roles, including involvement in mergers and acquisitions, advisory, fintech, life insurance, and cyber security businesses after leaving Parliament more than seven years ago.

“Lindsay brings a wide range of relevant public and private sector experience in financial services with an acute appreciation of the technological, regulatory, and political changes shaping the industry,” Suncorp Chairman Ziggy Switkowski said.

Tanner also serves as director of Virgin Australia International Airlines, Covata, and Victoria International Container Terminal; chairman of Mitchell Institute for Health & Education Research at the Victoria University and Essendon Football Club; and a member of the First Principles Review of Department of Defence. He is also a special advisor for Lazard Australia.
