A national general insurance and defendant-side dispute resolution firm has welcomed a new addition to its Adelaide office.

Alison Fitzgerald has joined Gilchrist Connell as a consultant, bringing further depth and experience to the firm’s senior ranks across a range of practice areas, including significant expertise in health law.

Prior to joining the firm, Fitzgerald spent several years as head of medical defence services in South Australia at Avant Mutual, leading the team providing on the ground advice and defence to the state’s medical practitioners.

“We’re thrilled that Alison has agreed to join us, or in fact re-join us as she was in our team at our former firm – longer ago than either of us care to remember,” said Richard Wood, managing principal. “Her contribution will be invaluable in supporting our busy Adelaide team and her health law expertise will be a perfect complement to our growing national health and medical malpractice capability.”

Alison also worked in senior roles in a national law firm and for the SA Crown Solicitor, was claims manager for a global broker, and had been a guest lecturer and tutor for Adelaide and Flinders Universities in the field of medical law.

Alison is currently on the board of the Burnside War Memorial Hospital and was the committee member with legal expertise on the Royal Adelaide Hospital Research Ethics Committee for three years.

Alison’s announcement follows a string of senior appointments including the firm’s chairman John Edmond.
