James Shipton, Chair, Asic

A certified veteran in the regulatory and financial space – both domestically and internationally – James Shipton was appointed chair of the Australian Securities and Investments Commission in early 2018 and has just completed his first full year at the helm of the organisation. In addition to serving as the head of Australia’s financial watchdog, Shipton leads a research centre at Harvard Law School, where he is the executive director of a program on international financial systems.

Shipton’s previous compliance and regulatory roles include executive director and commission member for the Hong Kong Securities and Futures Commission, head of government and regulatory affairs for Goldman Sachs’ Asia-Pacific operations, and managing director of Compliance Asia.

Shipton ruffled more than a few feathers towards the end of 2018 after ASIC recommended the abolition of commissions on all general insurance products in its submission to the royal commission. With four years of his term still to go, Shipton will be charged with guiding Australia’s financial sector through some serious changes and will be tasked with keeping the industry in check in a post-royal commission world.
