In 1944, the Government of Saskatchewan passed The Saskatchewan Government Insurance Act, creating the provincial Crown corporation that is known today as SGI.
SGI’s mandate since its inception has been to provide comprehensive, affordable insurance protection to the people of Saskatchewan. In 1980, legislated changes to The Saskatchewan Government Insurance Act, 1980, and The Automobile Accident Insurance Act distinguished between the compulsory vehicle insurance program for the province (the Saskatchewan Auto Fund) and the competitive insurer offering additional property and casualty products (SGI CANADA).
SGI offers its competitive property and casualty insurance products through SGI CANADA and its subsidiaries. Products are sold exclusively through a network of independent insurance brokers.
The company employs 2,500 people and works with a network of close to 350 independent insurance brokers in over 1,600 locations. Regina is the home of SGI CANADA's corporate head office.

SGI CANADA is the trade name of the property and casualty insurance division of SGI, offering products in five of Canada’s provinces. It operates as SGI CANADA in Saskatchewan, British Columbia, Alberta, Manitoba, and Ontario, and also as Coachman Insurance Company in Ontario. Operations outside Saskatchewan are held by the subsidiary company, SGI CANADA Insurance Services Ltd. Products are sold through a network of independent insurance brokers.

Leadership at SGI CANADA
Penny McCune – president and CEO
McCune was named president and CEO of SGI on June 1, 2022. She is the first female to hold the role in SGI history. Her career with SGI started in 1985 when she was hired for a three-day term as a junior clerk. Over the years, she rose through the ranks, each time taking on more responsibilities in more senior leadership positions.
McCune was born, raised and educated in Saskatchewan. She has a Bachelor of Administration from the University of Regina and her Chartered Insurance Professional designation from the Insurance Institute of Canada. On Aug. 8, 2022, she received the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Medal for her outstanding service to the Province of Saskatchewan.

SGI CANADA is an avid supporter of brokers in the country, with the Insurance Brokers Association of Canada (IBAC) announcing in 2022 that the P&C insurer, along with its Coachman Insurance subsidiary, has continued its sponsorship of the organization’s Broker Identity Program (BIP) national advertising campaign.
The BIP is a national advertising campaign that raises awareness of the significant value that insurance brokers provide for their clients in terms of choice, advice, and advocacy. In a statement, IBAC said that SGI CANADA and Coachman Insurance will continue as full partners.
"Brokers have our unwavering support in the face of any change we encounter in our industry, and as partners together,” said McCune.
“SGI CANADA's partnership with brokers is the reason this company has been successful over the past eight decades. It’s why we’re successful today. And it’s the reason we’ll be successful tomorrow.”
