Canadian Association of Insurance Women names Tracy Fata as the 2018 Insurance Woman of the Year

By Canadian Association of Insurance Women

At their AGM in Halifax, Nova Scotia, the CAIW proudly honoured Tracy Fata, of Portage Mutual Insurance in Edmonton, Alberta, the prestigious award of Insurance Woman of the Year.

Tracy started her insurance career in 1987 as a receptionist for the Cooperators in Edmonton. After a time, she trained to become a CSR and learned very quickly that working on the broker side was not her forte. From the Cooperators she took an Underwriting position with the Guardian Insurance Company as a Commercial Fleet Auto Underwriter.

She then moved to the commercial property department. With the birth of her son in 1993, she took time away from the industry, returning in 1996 to work with Morgex Insurance Brokers as an in-house underwriter for their teachers group.

In 2000 Tracy moved to Portage Mutual Insurance as the Personal Lines Property and Farm Underwriter.  While with Portage she completed her CIP and attained her FCIP (honours) and CRM designations. She was awarded the Judy Kalynchuk Memorial Award for Top Fellow.  In 2007 Tracy was promoted to Regional Manager of Branch Operations. In 2016 she stepped down from this position to work as the Regional Underwriting Manager where she has been much happier back working with their brokers. She spends much of her time training staff and brokers.

Tracy joined the CAIW Local Chapter, Edmonton Insurance Association, in 2004. Within a year she was on the Executive Board of the EIA as Secretary and then one year later was President and CAIW Director. Tracy has been instrumental in the success of the EIA and has recruited many of today’s members and Executive Board.

Tracy joined the CAIW Executive Board in 2011 and was CAIW President for the 2014/2015 term. Tracy is passionate about the EIA and CAIW. “I would not be where I am today without the support of the members of the EIA and CAIW. They are not only colleagues and mentors, but friends and insurance family. I have grown both professionally and personally from my involvement with these associations.”

Tracy is married to Tony. They have two children, son Nic (26) and daughter Andreana (23). In the winter you can find Tracy curling and golfing in the summer. Tracy and Tony love to spend time at their recreational property just north of the city. If money and time allowed, they would travel to Italy every year!
