SGI Canada’s recent contribution to insurance data standardization efforts with its submission of APIs to the Centre for Study of Insurance Operations (CSIO) has been extolled by the Insurance Brokers Association of Canada (IBAC).

The insurer submitted 12 API use cases, as well as sample XML request and response documents, to the Reusable Data Services Library (RDSL) hosted by CSIO. Available for access to CSIO carrier and vendor members, the API documentation includes complex transactions such as quote request, quote change request and policy sync.

IBAC praised SGI Canada’s decision, calling it a “significant contribution” to the IBAC Data Exchange project, which aims to establish real-time broker connectivity. The association also encouraged all CSIO members to adapt the information for their own operations.

“IBAC appreciates the support and involvement of SGI CANADA in this important initiative,” said IBAC CEO Peter Braid. “This represents another great example of how brokers and insurers can work together to accelerate industry connectivity for the ultimate benefit of consumers.”

“SGI CANADA is committed to the broker channel and focused on supporting our partners. One of the ways we show that is through our investment in technology – including APIs for data exchange that empower brokers to boost their digital capabilities,” added SGI Canada vice president of corporate business development Larry Nickel.

Nickel also commented that the true value of the investment in a real-time data exchange – like the one pushed by the IBAC – “will only be realized with industry-wide adoption.”

In March, Wawanesa Mutual Insurance was also praised by IBAC for submitting nine APIs to CSIO’s RDSL.
