IBC warns Atlantic residents to prepare for heavy rain this week

Catastrophe & Flood

Following weather forecasts that suggest that Atlantic Canada will be experiencing heavy rain and winds this week, the Insurance Bureau of Canada (IBC) has released a statement warning residents of the region to prepare for flooding and strong gusts.

Citing Environment Canada’s forecast, IBC warned that each Atlantic province is expected to sustain “significant” amounts of rain, particularly New Brunswick. Meanwhile, the west coast of Newfoundland and Labrador is projected to face winds with speeds of up to 120 km/h.

"This amount of rainfall could result in flooding and property damage," said IBC Atlantic vice president Amanda Dean in a release. "We want to ensure that residents throughout the region stay safe and prepare their homes for the impact of this severe weather system."

IBC shared several tips to help homeowners prepare for any storm and flood-related damage. These include creating an emergency preparedness plan for the entire household; moving valuable items out of the basement; preparing a detailed home inventory; clearing downspouts to ensure proper water runoff drainage; and securing any outdoor furniture to prevent them from flying off, among other tips.

In addition to the tips, IBC also offered important insurance-related reminders, such as:

  • Water damage in a basement due to a sewer backup is only covered if you have purchased specific, optional sewer backup coverage.
  • Overland flood damage, which occurs when bodies of water such as rivers overflow onto dry land, is only covered if you have purchased specific, optional overland flood coverage. However, if you live in a known flood plain, this coverage may not be available.
  • Damage to homes caused by wind is usually covered.
  • If you have purchased comprehensive or all perils automobile insurance coverage, damage to vehicles from wind, or water is usually covered.
  • In certain circumstances, homeowners who are unable to return home due to insured damage are entitled to additional living expenses.

IBC has advised that any homeowner with questions about their individual policy should contact their respective insurance representatives for more information.
