Environment Canada has issued a severe thunderstorm and rainfall warning for the Burgeo – Ramea area in Newfoundland and Labrador, warning that the rains could be dangerous enough to lead to flooding.

On August 26, 2020 at 12:49 AM NDT, the government agency issued its alert after satellite and radar imagery indicated that a narrow band of torrential rainfall will occur over the Burgeo – Ramea until the morning.

According to the agency, the total expected rainfall could range from 60 to 80 mm of rain. But some areas taking the brunt of the thunderstorm may see up to 120 mm of precipitation.

“Heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads. Fast-moving water across a road can sweep a vehicle away,” Environment Canada said in its warning, adding that the rains could continue through the remainder of the night.
