The Insurance Bureau of Canada (IBC) has launched new online-based risk planning tools for small businesses in Calgary.

The tools, which can be found at IBC.DiagnosticRocket.com, allow business owners to take a free diagnostic survey, which would assess their level of disaster preparedness. The resources also provide business owners with recommendations for improvements to mitigate disaster risk.

According to an IBC release, Calgary’s Chamber of Commerce has also contributed to the online toolset with the addition of a business continuity handbook and an emergency business contact database.

"Small and medium-sized businesses are the backbone of our community and their ability to recover from a disaster directly impacts local, provincial and national economies. We're proud to partner with the Calgary Chamber of Commerce on this innovative tool to help businesses prepare," said IBC acting vice-president of Western, Celyeste Power.

"These online tools will help businesses assess their risk exposure and detail the role that insurance plays in preparing for and recovering from a disaster. It's our hope that the information will lead to decisions that keep businesses operating after a crisis,” Power added.

IBC’s tools are based on the experiences and knowledge the Calgary Chamber of Commerce and the Calgary Emergency Management Agency have learned from the June 2013 floods in southern Alberta.
