Residents of the new Trump Tower in Vancouver voted to increase insurance coverage for terrorism just weeks before the hotel and condo residence opened.

According to strata minutes obtained by Postmedia, residents were told in a meeting held January 17, 2017, of plans to upgrade the building’s coverage to reflect “concerns surrounding recent local and world events.”

US President Donald Trump has recently become the center of controversy due to his policies, condemnation of the media, and stance on immigration. The tower has attracted the attention of the President’s critics. Two protests against the building have recently sprung up, with one declaring that it would deliberately avoid the tower’s area to make its point. City officials, too, had their reservations about Trump Tower, condemning the building’s association with the leader.

Vancouver councillor Kerry Jang once called the Tower a “beacon of intolerance.”

Public outrage apparent, the risk carried by the Trump name was considerable enough to convince Tower residents to vote to pay extra for the coverage.

“Most policies are inclusive of coverage that is relatively minor in nature and limited to $250,000 for terrorism related activities in Vancouver,” the minutes further read.

“The current status of the building and concerns surrounding recent local and world events were discussed further that lead to acquire the additional coverage, including terrorism to the full value of the air space parcels (ASP’s).”
