Gallagher Re has announced the promotion of Ben Wathen (pictured above) to chief claims officer. In this role, Wathen will lead the company’s Global Claims Advocacy team, bringing over two decades of experience in claims management, underwriting, and broking.
Wathen joined Gallagher Re in April 2024 as head of complex claims. Prior to that, he served as claims manager for reinsurance at Canopius Group from June 2019 to April 2024. His tenure at Canopius also included a role as senior claims adjuster.
Before joining Canopius, Wathen worked at MS Amlin for nearly seven years. He held positions as senior claims adjuster from January 2017 to February 2019 and claims adjuster from May 2012 to December 2016. Earlier in his career, he was a reinsurance claims technician at Amlin plc from November 2004 to April 2012.
Wathen’s experience also includes roles as a broker at Marsh from September 2003 to October 2004 and as a customs officer at HM Revenue & Customs from July 1997 to September 2003.
Gallagher Re said that Wathen’s extensive background and client-focused approach position him to effectively lead the firm’s global claims operations.
Last month, the reinsurance specialist also announced leadership changes within its analytics team in the Asia Pacific region that officially took effect this January.
Hemant Nagpal has taken on the role of head of analytics for Asia Pacific. In this position, Nagpal oversees the region’s analytics strategy, leveraging his extensive experience in catastrophe modeling and analytics.
In conjunction with Nagpal’s appointment, Darren Murch became deputy head of analytics for Asia Pacific. Murch has been with Gallagher Re for over three years, most recently serving as regional director.
