ABIR highlights new leadership wave across Bermuda reinsurance

The Association of Bermuda Insurers and Reinsurers (ABIR) has recognized 13 senior executives taking on new leadership roles across its member companies in 2025 and 2026.

ABIR’s membership forms the core of a Bermuda insurance and reinsurance market that operates in 150 countries and focuses on specialized coverages. The association estimates that Bermuda reinsurers account for about 36% of the global reinsurance market based on property/casualty net premiums earned.

The leadership changes come at a time when ABIR and Bermuda Monetary Authority data show the market has been expanding in both premium and capital. Member companies reported a 10% year-over-year increase in 2024 gross written premium to more than US$188 billion, while total equity rose to US$178 billion, and the BMA’s 2025 stress testing found that most long-term reinsurers held capital comfortably above regulatory thresholds.

Those figures build on earlier disclosures that ABIR members wrote US$171 billion in gross written premium in 2023, up from US$145 billion in 2022.

Mark Cloutier (pictured above), ABIR chair and Aspen executive group chair, said the appointments underscore the depth of the island’s talent pool. “ABIR is proud to celebrate our member companies’ world-class leadership,” Cloutier said, adding that Bermuda’s position as a global insurance and reinsurance hub “has always been anchored in the depth and quality of its talent.”

The executives assuming new positions include Jennifer Wilson, who has been named CEO of Lancashire. At Hamilton, Adrian Daws becomes CEO of Hamilton Re, while Tim Duffin steps in as group chief underwriting officer of Hamilton Insurance Group and Susan Steinhoff becomes chief underwriting officer for Hamilton Re.

Hamilton has also appointed Russ Buckley as chief risk officer of Hamilton Insurance Group and chief risk officer of Hamilton Re, and named Raymond Karrenbauer chief information officer at Hamilton Re.

At Conduit Re, Neil Eckert has been appointed CEO and William Randolph chief risk officer, while Hannover Re has named Rhonda Hasell as chief financial officer.

SiriusPoint has announced a series of changes, including the appointment of Phil Enan as chief strategy and corporate development officer, Andrew Pryde as group chief risk officer, Martin Hudson as director and Maria Tarhanidis as chief investment officer.

John Huff, ABIR’s chief executive, said the association “congratulates these outstanding leaders, as they take on new responsibilities at a time when the world’s need for protection is growing, and our industry’s role has never been more vital.”

He said they “embody the innovative spirit and disciplined leadership that define Bermuda’s international [insurance and] reinsurance market,” as ABIR members work to deliver “strength, stability, and solutions for a rapidly changing risk landscape.”
