Gallagher Re has announced the appointment of Andrew Phelan as chairman of global credit, surety (excluding the US), and political risk.

Phelan will be based in Bermuda and is tasked with expanding the company’s presence across the UK and international markets.

Phelan brings more than 25 years of experience in the reinsurance and specialty lines sector. Prior to joining Gallagher Re, he served as head of specialty lines (Bermuda) and global product lead at MS Amlin, where he managed a team underwriting 13 lines of reinsurance. His responsibilities included global oversight of political risk, trade credit, surety, and mortgage products.

Earlier in his career, Phelan worked as a senior broker at Aon Benfield, focusing on political risk, trade credit, surety, and various financial lines. He spent time in both London and New York during his tenure with the firm.

Phelan also held the role of vice president and head of trade credit at Radian Asset Assurance Limited, leading teams in London and New York that specialized in trade credit, surety, and political risk reinsurance underwriting.

Phelan’s previous positions include director at NCM Re, where he was responsible for outward reinsurance placement and strategy for the company’s global trade credit insurance operations. He also worked as a reinsurance broker at Benfield Greig, with a mandate covering trade credit, surety, and political risk on a global scale.

Gallagher Re expansion

In addition to Phelan’s appointment, Gallagher Re has strengthened its specialty lines team in the UK. In August, the company named Alexander Georgetti as executive director for its UK specialty lines division. Georgetti oversees the production and placement of credit, surety, and political risk business for both UK and global clients.

Gallagher Re has also expanded its leadership in Asia. Earlier this month, the company appointed Jennifer Wen as executive director for its Taiwan team. Wen, who brings more than 30 years of experience in reinsurance treaty markets, is responsible for leading Gallagher Re’s business growth and expansion in Taiwan.

In the Nordics, Gallagher Re appointed Carl Axel Holtsmark as head of life, accident, and health. Holtsmark, who is based in Oslo, brings actuarial expertise and experience from roles at Gabler AS, KPMG Norway, and SCOR. He is tasked with leading the delivery of reinsurance solutions for clients in the region and supporting Gallagher Re’s specialty and regional growth strategy.
