Antares Global has appointed James Day (pictured) as property treaty underwriter, a hire that deepens its bench in one of the Lloyd's market's most actively contested lines.

Day joins from MS Amlin, where he spent more than 20 years as a senior underwriter building expertise across global and North American property treaty business. His background spans both non-proportional and proportional structures, the two primary frameworks through which reinsurers accept risk from cedants. He brings long-standing broker and cedant relationships in a market where the coming renewal cycle is already shaping up to reward familiarity over price.

Day will report to Mat Storr. Storr was promoted to head of reinsurance at Antares in August after four years as class underwriter, property treaty at the syndicate. Day's appointment is the first external hire under his leadership.

Disciplined underwriting, not rate arbitrage

Property catastrophe rates fell 16% at mid-year 2026, according to Guy Carpenter data. In that environment, access and cedant relationships carry more weight than ever for a platform looking to grow its share of the property treaty book.

Storr's public commentary ahead of the Rendez-Vous de Septembre earlier this month laid out how Antares intends to compete. He argued that pricing in the current cycle is growing more differentiated by portfolio quality, loss performance and the credibility of data being presented, rather than moving uniformly downward as some buyers assume.

That view gives Day's hire specific context. North American property treaty is among the most actively contested segments of the reinsurance market in 2026. Cedants with strong data and consistent performance are finding supportive terms. Those without are encountering growing selectivity. An underwriter with two decades of specialist experience across that territory is a direct investment in Antares's ability to lead programmes on the right accounts.

Antares also holds an established position in the North American property market through Antares Re, its Bermuda-based reinsurance company. Antares Re is licensed in more than 20 countries and writes property treaty placements alongside the Lloyd's platform. Day's appointment connects the syndicate's London underwriting capability to a book that already spans US domestic and international property schedules.

A platform with North American reach

Day holds an Associate in Reinsurance (ARe) designation and an Advanced Certificate in Insurance (ACII). Antares's commercial division, which covers Syndicate 1274 and Antares Re Bermuda, grew premiums 11.4% year-on-year to US$869 million in 2025. Storr's remit includes building broker relationships and developing the reinsurance portfolio across both platforms.

Mat Storr said the appointment adds to Antares's "joined-up reinsurance proposition" across Antares Re and Syndicate 1274. "James will work closely with teams across the business to drive profitable growth, strengthen key broker relationships and build on the success of the reinsurance team," he said.
