Zambia-based reinsurer Klapton Reinsurance has appointed Mukuma Musenge as chief technology officer. The move establishes a dedicated technology leadership role to oversee the company's digital infrastructure, cybersecurity, and data capabilities.
Musenge will oversee the reinsurer's technology strategy, including its core reinsurance platform, cybersecurity framework, data engineering, systems integration, and vendor management. His remit also includes developing governance for artificial intelligence (AI) and automation as the business broadens its technology function.
The appointment comes as reinsurers place greater emphasis on AI, cybersecurity, and technology governance. These areas have become strategic concerns as firms seek to improve resilience, strengthen decision-making, and manage increasingly complex risk exposures.
Musenge previously served as Klapton Re's information technology manager from 2021 to 2022. During that stint, he helped establish the company's IT function and support deployment of its core reinsurance platform. He later worked as an information technology consultant for Klapton Insurance Zambia before becoming chief executive of Kuala Tech, an information and communications technology firm that develops digital insurance solutions.
His experience spans primary insurance, reinsurance, brokerage and wider ICT infrastructure. It also gives him exposure to technology implementation across different parts of the insurance value chain.
The focus on AI also reflects wider industry developments. Reinsurers are increasingly working with academic institutions and technology providers to develop AI applications for underwriting, pricing and portfolio management, signalling a shift from experimentation towards operational deployment.
In his new role, Musenge will lead the development of integrated systems and data-led solutions intended to improve operational efficiency, customer experience and business decision-making. A Klapton Re spokesperson said he is expected to align technology initiatives with business objectives while supporting the company's modernisation efforts in Zambia and the wider region.
Musenge also co-founded Zambia-based event management platform Nova Ticketing in 2025. He holds a Master of Science in Project Management from the University of Lusaka and a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science from the University of Zambia.
His initial priorities include a board-reportable cybersecurity framework, oversight of the company's DXC SICS core reinsurance platform, a dedicated tools and technology function, and governance for the responsible use of AI.
The focus on data engineering aligns with investment across the reinsurance sector. Companies are deploying platforms that provide real-time portfolio insights and cyber risk monitoring. The trend underscores demand for integrated technology to support underwriting, exposure management and operational oversight.
