The Reinsurance Association of America (RAA) has elected Nic Berg (pictured above), head of P&C North America at SCOR and CEO of SCOR US, as chair of its board, handing the Washington-based trade group's top seat to a European reinsurer's US chief at a moment of mounting policy and catastrophe pressures.
Berg's election at the RAA's 58th annual meeting on April 24, 2026 was accompanied by the appointment of John Bender, chairman of reinsurance and risk management at Allied World Reinsurance Company, as vice chair, and Christopher Donelan, CEO of global reinsurance at Sompo International Holdings, as secretary-treasurer.
Tracey Laws, president and CEO of the RAA, said the new slate takes the helm as the industry contends with evolving risks and rising demands on resilience.
"At this important moment for the reinsurance industry, with evolving risks, changing market dynamics, and increasing demands on resilience, the RAA is grateful for the leadership and expertise these individuals bring to our work," she said.
The RAA, headquartered in Washington, bills itself as the leading trade association of property and casualty reinsurers doing business in the US, lobbying state, federal and international bodies on catastrophe risk, regulatory reform, tax and climate policy.
Berg succeeds Jon Colello, president of PartnerRe, who was elected chair at the 57th annual meeting in April 2025. During his year in the role, the RAA pushed back against a Brookings Institution proposal for a federal homeowners reinsurance program, called for full FY2026 funding for NOAA, and urged the President's FEMA Council to expand private flood insurance options.
Colello also presided over the previously announced leadership handover from longtime RAA president Frank Nutter to Laws.
Berg joined SCOR in April 2022 after spending most of his career at AIG, where he held global and regional executive roles in New York, Paris and London across P&C underwriting, finance and claims.
He served as AIG's chief claims officer for North America from 2017 to 2019, and holds a master's in law from the University of Paris II and a master's in international risk management from HEC.
Bender oversees Allied World's assumed and ceded reinsurance operations, enterprise risk management and catastrophe modeling. He previously served as president and CEO of the firm's global reinsurance operations from 2011 to 2023 and led the buildout of its US reinsurance unit between 2007 and 2011.
Donelan was appointed CEO of global reinsurance at Sompo in March 2020, having previously served as deputy CEO, chairman of North America reinsurance, and chief underwriting officer of global casualty reinsurance. He brings more than 30 years of industry experience and holds an MBA in insurance and risk management from St. John's University.
