Global specialty re/insurer SiriusPoint has announced that its wholly owned subsidiary, International Medical Group (IMG), will acquire Assist America in a deal aimed at expanding medical and travel assistance operations.
Assist America, founded in 1990 by George W. Howard III, provides emergency travel assistance services. The company generates about US$20 million in annual assistance revenue, SiriusPoint said.
The business sells its services largely through insurance companies, which include the offering in corporate benefit plan products, according to SiriusPoint. Assist America provides emergency assistance services to more than 40 million members across Asia, the Middle East and North America, the company said.
SiriusPoint CEO Scott Egan said the transaction is expected to contribute to SiriusPoint’s financial results and add fee-based income.
“The acquisition is accretive to both return on equity and earnings per share, adds additional capital-light fee income, and reinforces our commitment to building a diversified, high-performing portfolio.”
The acquisition follows leadership changes at IMG, the SiriusPoint unit that provides global insurance benefits and assistance services. SiriusPoint announced Will Nihan (pictured above) became IMG’s CEO effective Nov. 3, and that outgoing CEO Mike Hirschfeld will remain on the executive team during the transition.
Nihan said the acquisition broadens IMG’s geographic reach in assistance services and supports its medical and travel assistance offering for clients. Assist America CEO Brian Mulligan said the family-owned company is entering a new phase after 35 years in operation.
