About Admiral

Admiral is one of the largest car insurance providers in the UK, with brands around the world. It has grown from only 57 staff in 1993 to more than 10,000 people at its offices in the UK, Spain, Italy, France, USA, Canada, India, Mexico, and Turkey.

The company offers car, van, home, and travel insurance, as well as personal loans and car finance. As part of its commitment to supporting more than 6.5 million customers worldwide, each department in the company consistently asks customers for feedback and receives recognition for excellent service.

History of Admiral

Admiral was founded in 1991 and launched in 1993 with only one brand. After years in the UK car insurance market, it was able to tap into the home and travel insurance markets and extend its services to different parts of the world.

In September 2004, Admiral floated on the London Stock Exchange – with an initial offer price of 275 pence per existing ordinary share. As the demand for shares increased, the gross aggregate demand received for the global offer reached approximately £1.5 billion. As a result, the company’s ordinary shares were included in the official list of the London Stock Exchange, and unconditional dealings began.

Admiral has continued to receive awards throughout the years. In 2018, the company was considered the 20th best workplace in the world in Great Place to Work’s annual 25 World’s Best Workplaces list. In 2019, it was named the Best Big Company to Work For in the UK in the Sunday Times Best Companies awards.

Leadership at Admiral

David Stevens – CEO and Co-Founder

Stevens co-founded Admiral in 1991 before becoming its CEO in 2016. He earned his MBA from INSEAD in 1988 and received an award from QBE in 2010 for his services to the insurance industry and community in Wales. Before joining Admiral, Stevens worked with McKinsey & Company, Financial Interest Group, and Cadbury Schweppes in the UK and USA. In March 2020, he announced his retirement as the company’s CEO after 30 years of service. He will be replaced as CEO after a 12-month transition period by Milena Mondini de Focatiis, the current leader of Admiral’s UK and Europe business.

Culture at Admiral

Admiral is committed to giving back to the community and protecting people from the consequences of car crashes and damage to their homes. It focuses on four stakeholders that drive its corporate social responsibility strategy: its people, customers, community, and the environment.

In 1998, the company launched a community giving fund to help its people and their families who are involved with local charities and organisations. The employees could apply to the Admiral Community Chest for funding for an organisation they support, resulting in financial contributions to thousands of charities, organisations, and clubs.

The company also sponsors many organisations and events in the UK to support local communities, recognise and celebrate diversity, support events that its employees might find interesting, and raise its profile as a good employer within the community.
