Consilium – the re/insurance broker arm of The Aventum Group – has appointed Andrew Sommerville as head of specialty.

As head of specialty, Sommerville will be responsible for managing and growing all niche specialty lines business at Consilium, including developing its international aviation business.

Sommerville has 36 years of aviation broking experience; he joins Consilium from aviation broker Grimme Butcher Jones, where he most recently served as managing director. Prior to that role, he was at Integro, and had spent 14 years with Aon and 10 years at Marsh.

“Having a central hub for all specialty lines will introduce greater collaboration and efficiencies and encourage better cross-sell strategies across our group broking vertical. I’m delighted to welcome Andrew to the Aventum family,” said Aventum CEO David Bearman.

Bearman added that Sommerville’s expertise in aviation would further develop Consilium’s capabilities in that area, and that aviation presented “an exciting market opportunity globally” for the company’s broker partners.

“Over the past 25 years Aventum has established a strong reputation for its expertise in niche areas and various specialist facilities.  The aviation market is a niche sector that merits a significant presence within the Aventum Group,” commented Sommerville. “With the combination of increased aviation experience and capability, and Aventum’s focused philosophy, it took little time to consider the synergies and see an exciting future.”

Sommerville also said that Aventum was well-placed to deliver on market demands and clients’ expectations, particularly in Africa, which is experiencing the hardest effect of capacity changes and increased rate trends, he explained.

“We plan to build the whole speciality team further and I look forward to maximising its potential within the group,” Sommerville commented.
